The Global One-Stop Shop for Synthetic Trading and Traditional Lending

At Wematch we are driving the digitization of the securities finance space by connecting market participants. Our platform has grown from a focus on the total return swap (TRS) market to also offering optimized workflow and lifecycle management for interest rate derivatives, equity derivatives and delta one products, collateralized finance, and securities lending. The results speak for themselves: back in February, we announced a new milestone– US$150 billion of notional outstanding on our platform globally, with EMEA alone representing US$116 billion in ongoing notional.

We have now onboarded close to 1000 traders and sales staff at nearly 100 financial institutions onto the platform, aiming to be the number one TRS platform on a global scale. How did we do this? By developing innovative workflow solutions and offering a broad suite of workflow and optimization tools.

What’s unique about Wematch is that we offer integrated workflow across the trade lifecycle, but we are agnostic to where the trade is negotiated, whether on our platform or elsewhere. Our focus has been on developing an open architecture workflow, enabling our users to import trade data into the system wherever the trade has been printed.

What’s next? We want to be the global one-stop shop for synthetic trading and traditional lending. TRS occupy an important place in the securities financing ecosystem, with an expanding community of users recognizing the flexibility, risk management, and balance sheet advantages of synthetic lending. We support institutions already involved in the TRS space who are interested in expanding their TRS franchise to a wider range of trading partners.

At Wematch we recognize the potential blurring of the lines between synthetic and traditional lending. We see it as a technical challenge, but also as a commercial opportunity for us and the community we support. Prime broker firms are constantly seeking ways to reduce the regulatory capital impact of their trading and financing strategies and are liaising with their counterparts on the lending side to identify whether they can shift some of the balance from physical to synthetic lending. We believe we’re well-positioned to facilitate this trend and to help bridge the gap between traditional and synthetic finance.
